Dr. Brittany Giles is a professional bassoonist and passionate color guard educator based in Houston, TX She is the founder and CEO of Studio G, LLC, a business designed to provide quality handmade bassoon reeds to pre-professional bassoonists and educators and superior education in both bassoon and color guard.
A passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion, Dr. G believes every student, regardless of background, should have the ability to achieve any of their dreams and actively works to provide such spaces for all of her students. As a private teacher, she provides an individualized curriculum for each student to attain their highest potential. Her private students have successfully auditioned into numerous honor bands, including but not limited to KMEA High School All-State and KBO Middle School All-State. They have also been accepted into numerous collegiate music programs throughout the United States such as Michigan State University, Ithaca College, Central Michigan University, and University of Kentucky.
As a bassoonist, Dr. G has been selected for master classes given by many international renowned bassoonists, such as Marc Vallon, Susan Nelson, Chris Weait, Loren Glickman, and Martin Kuuskmann. She has most recently been selected as the first prize winner for the Sigma Alpha Iota Mary Ann Starring Memorial Graduate Performance award and was invited to perform at the SAI National Convention in July 2018. An advocate for contemporary chamber music, Brittany has served as a founding member to six new chamber groups since 2012, as well as researching 21st century chamber music by American women composers as part of her graduate studies. Her award-winning research was most recently published in the Spring 2019 Edition of PANPIPES, Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity's quarterly journal.
As a color guard performer, she perfected her skills with the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps in 2012 and 2013, earning her a spot in the 50th Anniversary Bluecoats Alumni Corps color guard in 2022! She came out of retirement to enjoy a season with Lexis World Guard out of Lexington, KY in 2024, culminating in a WGI World Class Semifinalist placement. As an educator, she has taught, designed, and choreographed on the staff of numerous high schools throughout Kentucky, Ohio, New York, and Michigan since 2014. She has also worked to establish winter programs at three different high school districts in her career, one of which was promoted twice to A Class in the 2022 winter season. Currently, she is the director of color guards at Mayde Creek High School in Katy, TX and serves on the color guard staff with the Guardians Drum & Bugle Corps out of San Antonio, TX.
She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Bassoon Performance from Michigan State University, a Master's in Music Performance from Ithaca College (NY), and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Morehead State University (KY). Her prominent bassoon teachers include Michael Kroth, Christin Schillinger, and David Oyen, with her color guard experience shaped by David Fonda, Kathy Pearson, Jim Moore, and Jon Vanderkolff among many others.
In her limited free time, she can be found reading, binging tv on Netflix, or at the dog park with her rescue pup, Stella.
